The 38 miles long barrier island Assateague, which lies to the east of Chincoteague Island, protects Chincoteague Island from the Atlantic Ocean. It is a well known, protected wildlife sanctuary. It also offers one of the most beautiful beach on the Atlantic Coastline.

Beyond that this paradise island is famed for the wild horses that roam nearby Assateague Island. Every July the Pony Penning and auction is a highlight for residents and tourists. Beyond this very week in July you are welcome to explore everything about the local ponies at the Pony Centre.
Further all this exciting attraction Chincoteague Island is a birder’s paradise, which is home to herons, bald eagles, and woodpeckers, and many more. Don’t miss to stop by at the award-winning Herbert H. Bateman Educational and Administrative Center. This visitor center invites you to several informative exhibits and the friendly staff will answer all your questions about the refuge.

The Chincoteague Museum tells the story of Chincoteague Island history, of the oyster trade and seafood business which were the major industries for more than 100 years.

Another excellent opportunity to dive into Chincoteague’s history is a visit to Captain Timothy Hill House, the oldest home on the island. You’ll be amazed to learn that this small house speaks volumes about the beginnings of our nation.In nearby Pocomoke City the Delmarva Discovery Center welcomes you to explore Delmarva’s heritage and rich history.
One of the highlights of your vacation will be the visitor’s center of NASA launch site on Wallops Island, just off Chincoteague.

In addition you might want to explore the many opportunities mother nature provides for you on this beautiful island by bike, kayak or boat. Boating and experiencing the bay around the island is a well appreciated fun-filled activity for everyone. Rent a boat, a kayak, or book a guided scenic boat tour! You will enjoy every minute of it.
If biking is not yours, have a look in the local moped and scooter rentals. Many guests have fun to try out this slow paste transportation while enjoying the ride on beautiful Chincoteague Island.

Crabbing, Clamming and Fishing are one of the highlights for many of our guests. Charter Fishing boats take you out for offshore fishing, but you will also be quickly successful right from the docks and many locations on the water around the island.

If you feel you have relaxed enough, grab a surf board and enjoy the wave. Never done before? Get a lesson provided by local surfers.
After a gorgeous day on the beach join the island residents at bowling, at the movies, or one of the best ice cream place you ever visited.

During your stay you’ll have many opportunities to get in touch with the friendly islander at the local Farmer’s Market, the Library, the 2nd Saturday Art Stroll, the Island Theatre Company, or the Island Arts Organization. Take a class at the Chincoteague Cultural Alliance or join Chincoteague Natural History Association in one of their many activities.
